How to treat sunburn naturally
It’s that time of year again, the sun has finally decided to show its face, the layers have been lifted and we’re in more contact with the UV rays. It’s really important to protect yourself from the sun… but if you’ve been unlucky enough to get caught and burnt from these harmful rays, we’ve got some helpful natural remedies to help soothe and treat your skin.
Oat Bath
Soothe your skin in a bath of lukewarm water and 1 cup of oatmeal. Soak in the bath for at least 10-15 minutes. This will help soothe any itchiness and will also help to cool the skin. After you’ve finished soaking, be sure to pat yourself dry so your skin is damp and then apply a natural moisturiser.
Aloe Vera
Unsure of a natural moisturiser? Aloe Vera is an effective natural gel moisturiser. Some aloe products contain lidocaine, an anesthetic that can help relieve sunburn pain. Aloe Vera is also a good moisturizer for peeling skin. If you’ve not got any aloe vera handy, coconut oil is also effective for cooling and treating the skin.
Vitamin E
As we always say, food is medicine, and in the instance of sunburn, it’s really important to consume foods which are high in Vitamin E.
Vitamin E is an antioxidant and can help reduce inflammation caused by sunburn. Foods which contain Vitamin E include, sunflower seeds, avocados, spinach, broccoli and butternut squash. We’ve got a really lovely butternut squash soup recipe which could help (link).
Cucumber
Cucumbers have natural antioxidant and analgesic (pain relieving) properties. Chill cucumbers, then mash in a blender to create a paste, and apply to affected sunburned areas including the face. Cucumber also can be soothing for peeling skin following a sunburn.
